1 in 17 songs in triple j’s Hottest 100 are metal/hard rock
Metal and hard rock music, which had its triple j Hottest 100 heyday in the 1990s, now makes up about six per cent of the poll in 2019.
Changing listener tastes mean the top spot is more likely to feature an indie, hip-hop, pop or electronic artist.
The poll has not been won by a metal or hard rock act since 2007 when Muse took it out with Knights of Cydonia.
While some might brush off the list as a microcosm of music, the fact is, the Hottest 100 calls itself the world’s biggest annual online music poll for a reason – a record 2.7 million votes were received last countdown.
triple j’s list, which this year features 1460 songs, is based on what they have played throughout the year.
Voters can, however, vote for songs not on the list, as long as the tracks meet certain criteria.
Let’s break down some numbers and interesting facts for the upcoming poll before running through the A-Z of all the heavy artists.
Out of the 1460 songs, there are 85 metal and hard rock songs, or about 6pc.
Of these 85 heavy songs, 52 are by Australian artists, or 61pc.
The list features 2019 Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album ARIA award-winner, Northlane.
Rapper Denzel Curry’s cover of Rage Against The Machine’s Bulls On Parade is the most popular heavy Like A Version on YouTube and 10th most popular overall, with seven million views. Considering it was recorded in February and the most viewed Like A Version was recorded in 2015 by Childish Gambino (28 million), it’s an impressive feat.
